This matryoshka doll (aka babushka dolls or Russian nesting dolls) comes directly from Moscow. The set is crafted of wood, skillfully hand painted and varnished with gloss finish. The dolls are signed by the artist. The dolls are all hollow except the smallest one, and can hide one inside another.

The painted miniature is based on the poem "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel" by Alexander Pushkin. There are several different translations. The most famous translation by Walter Arndt can be found here.
